Ebook About Now in an annual, treasury-sized book, Baby Blues brings you another year of life with the MacPhersons. Often-befuddled Darryl and always-overworked Wanda manage to parent precocious Zoe, ornery Hammie, and Baby Wren while still keeping their senses of humor and sometimes even sweetness. In this collection, Zoe decides it's time for her to take karate lessons, Wanda declares she needs some time for herself and joins a book (wine?) club, and Hammie discovers the joys of a zip line. Mostly calm Wanda finally reaches her breaking point of asking the kids to clean up, unleashing a new force of nature to the comic strip: the Tsumommy!Book BEDLAM: A Baby Blues Collection Review :
(THIS REVIEW CONTAINS A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF WHICH BABY BLUES BOOKS YOU SHOULD BUY AND IN WHAT ORDER.)Baby Blues is a hilarious spot-on comic strip about parenting. The strip begins as Wanda and Daryl bring home Zoe, their first born, and ask themselves “Now what?” The answer is “life”. The children age at a 3:1 ratio (real time:children aging). As of 2018, Wanda and Daryl’s three kids are Zoe (age 9), Hammie (age 7), and Wren (age 19 months). The antics of the children and the vagaries of parenthood keep the strip always amusing. While the books were presumably written for an adult audience, they are absolutely appropriate for children. And never feel bad about your kids reading comic strips. They are reading nearly as many words per minute as if they were reading a chapter book, and comic strips will build their vocabulary since they were written for an adult audience.I originally bought the Baby Blues books for myself; the series started shortly before my first child was born. Over the years, I just kept buying them as new books were released. Both of my daughters love these books as well. In fact, my younger daughter’s earliest reading material included Family Circus, Calvin and Hobbes, and Baby Blues. Except for the occasional odd question like “Mommy, what’s an episiotomy?”, this actually worked out quite well for us. Because she is on the autism spectrum, Baby Blues actually helped her with comprehension of family dynamics and provided her with material for scripted speech, which then provided a stepping off point for developing her own speech and her own voice. (Her speech was delayed by years. Now she’s in college.) I hesitate to add that it might have helped with social skills as well, considering that bad manners often rule the day in Baby Blues strips, but it probably did. In any case, I can highly recommend these books to the parents of autistic children; they helped my daughter’s development in a number of ways - and she had fun reading them! In fact, it was her idea.*There are three types of Baby Blues books:Scrapbooks contain every strip published in the newspaper, but in most volumes the Sunday comics are not in color.Treasuries contain strips from the scrapbooks. These may be comprehensive or “best of”; it varies. The only new material is odds and ends such as author commentary, song lyrics, and various similar miscellany. Sunday strips are in color.Collections center around a theme such as school.MY STRONG RECOMMENDATION is to buy all of the scrapbooks and read them in order. That way you will read every strip without duplication. I don’t think the miscellany included in the treasuries (some of which we bought before we realized the strips were duplicates) is worth the added expense, and I certainly wouldn’t purchase a collection when we already own all of the scrapbooks.I recommend that you purchase the following books and read them in this order:Baby Blues: This is Going to Be Tougher Than We Thought**She Started It**Guess Who Didn’t Take a Nap?**Scrapbook 4 I Thought Labor Ended When the Baby Was BornScrapbook 5 We Are Experiencing Parental Difficulties … Please Stand ByScrapbook 6 Night of the Living DadScrapbook 7 I Saw Elvis in My UltrasoundScrapbook 8 One More and We’re OutnumberedScrapbook 9 Check, Please...Scrapbook 10 threats, bribes, and videotapeScrapbook 11 If I’m A Stay-At-Home Mom, Why Am I Always in the Car?Scrapbook 12 Lift and SeparateScrapbook 13 I Shouldn’t Have to Scream More Than Once!Scrapbook 14 Motherhood is Not For WimpsScrapbook 15 Baby Blues: UnpluggedScrapbook 16 Dad To The BoneScrapbook 17 Never A Dry MomentScrapbook 18 Two Plus One is EnoughScrapbook 19 Playdate: Category 5Scrapbook 20 Our Server is DownScrapbook 21 Something Chocolate This Way ComesScrapbook 22 Briefcase Full of Baby BluesScrapbook 23 Night ShiftScrapbook 24 My SpaceScrapbook 25 The Natural Disorder of ThingsScrapbook 26 Ambushed in The Family RoomScrapbook 27 Cut!Scrapbook 28 Eat Cry PoopScrapbook 29 Scribbles at an ExhibitionScrapbook 30 Bedlam***Scrapbook 31 Wetter Louder StickierScrapbook 32 No Yelling!Scrapbook 33 GROSS!Scrapbook 34 Binge ParentingScrapbook 35 Adult Time*If you buy the books for this purpose, I recommend starting your child on the treasury 10 Years and Still in Diapers. This volume will be more “high interest” because the children are a bit older. Then once your child is hooked, you can start over from the beginning!**These early books were not yet labelled “scrapbook” but it’s the same concept.***Starting with Scrapbook 30, the scrapbook and treasury concepts are merged. The books are larger and contain a year’s worth of strips (rather than the previous nine months’ worth). Glad to see another collection (#30) of Baby Blues. Almost could have titled this one "The Adventures of Hammie." Very funny. Only negative is that for whatever reason, the publisher chose to put a couple of the large color strips in the book where some of the dialogue gets caught in the binding and it is very hard to read it. Might have been an oversight. Overall, a small irritation to an otherwise welcome addition to the Baby Blues book collection. BTW, I ahve all 30 of the Scrapbooks and nearly all of the compilations. One big recommendation to all Baby Blues lovers is to get the BBXX: Blues Decades 1 & 2. Awesome collection!
